These questions help ensure the team is aligned on what a successful outcome actually looks like — and that the research is genuinely set up to change how you act. What is the single most important decision this research needs to enable — and who owns that decision? What does "confident enough to act" look like for your team? What threshold of evidence will move you forward? What do you already believe to be true, and which of those beliefs are you most at risk of confirming rather than testing? What would you do differently if the research came back surprising? If the answer is "nothing," is this study worth running?Who are the stakeholders who need to accept and act on these findings, and what will it take to convince them? ## STEP 2: RUN FOCUSED QUAL EXPLORATION Surface language, friction, and hypotheses worth testing. ### Questions to ask during and after fieldwork Qualitative research earns its place when it genuinely opens up your thinking — not just when it adds texture to conclusions you've already drawn. These questions help teams stay honest about what they're hearing and where the real signal lives. Are you talking to the right people — the ones who experience this problem most acutely, not just those easiest to recruit? What language are participants using that your team wasn't? Where does their vocabulary diverge from yours?Where do participants get stuck, give up, or reach for a workaround — and what does that friction reveal about unmet needs?Which hypotheses are gaining traction across multiple conversations, and which are you hearing from only one or two voices? What surprised you? What did you hear that you didn't expect and can't yet explain? ## STEP 3: VALIDATE QUANTITATIVELY Test and size the strongest hypotheses at scale. ### Questions to ask before and during your quantitative phase Moving from qual to quant is where mixed-method research either delivers on its promise or quietly reverts to confirming the brief. These questions help ensure your survey or study is actually testing what you learned — not what you assumed coming in.Are you testing the hypotheses that emerged from qual, or the ones you believed before the research started? Is your sample representative of the decision you're actually making — the right market, segment, and behavioral profile? Are you measuring what people actually do, or only what they say they would do? How are you accounting for that gap? What effect size would be meaningful enough to act on, and is your study powered to detect it? ## STEP 4: SYNTHESIZE FOR ACTION Translate findings into clear choices, tradeoffs, and next actions. ### Questions to ask before you present findings Synthesis is where research either earns its seat at the table or gets filed away. The goal isn't a comprehensive report — it's a clear articulation of what the findings mean for the decision at hand, including what they don't resolve. What are the two or three decisions this research actually resolves — and what questions does it leave open? What are the real tradeoffs embedded in this decision — who benefits, who doesn't, and what does your team have to give up?What is the single most important thing a decision-maker needs to walk away knowing?
